Recognizing Your Dimensions of Identity

Through reflective and engaging activities, team members select and prioritize the aspects of who they are that they believe others need to know to gain inside knowledge about how to work more sensitively and empathetically. In other words, how to "get them" in an identity rich world. The three independent learning modules in Becoming an Inclusive Team Member are:

  • Recognizing your dimensions of identity
  • Prioritizing your dimensions of identity to help others “get you”
  • Building self-awareness and confidence to have straightforward conversations

Recognizing Identity Differences at Work

Practice identifying and responding to the many identities they interact with and are present in including teammates, colleagues, community members and many external stakeholders.

  • Learn to recognize the dimensions of identity at play in team interactions
  • Learn to spot identity-based conflicts and barriers that are occurring between team members
  • Learn to see yourself and colleagues as a whole person

Part 2: Becoming an Inclusive Team

Move from independent learning to web-based tools that will help your team have meaningful conversations and create a more inclusive and collaborative team environment. This step guides teams on how to work in partnership and share the responsibility to increase your teams:

  • Psychological Safety
  • Social Sensitivity
  • Clear and Unbiased Team Norms

Your team will then participate in facilitated conversations to share what's most important about who you are - so that together, your team will come to understand - this is WHO WE ARE.

How Does it Work?

A Team Building Coach will be assigned to support you and your team and facilitate conversations in a safe environment where members can share how their identity dimensions shape their life experiences and the ways they show up at work. This process helps team members:

  • Increase empathy by learning about each team member
  • Better understand team members' hot buttons, triggers and sensitivities
  • Share accountability for maintaining team norms
  • Establish team goals and share responsibility to meet them
  • Participate in courageous conversations related to identity, diversity, and differeing mindsets.
